Safety Information Notice - Road Legal ATV’s fitted with a Hydraulic parking brake
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has recently written to owners of Road-Legal ATV’s (Quadricycles) to inform them of a potential problem with certain vehicles fitted with hydraulic parking brakes. Vehicles fitted with a mechanical parking brake or an automatic gearbox transmission lock are not affected.
The problem only affects ATV’s that are steered by a handlebar (not a steering wheel) and are fitted with a hydraulic parking brake. Typically, this will be a device which locks one of the hydraulic brake levers in place.
VOSA are not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the failure of the parking brake, but, given the potential safety risk of a vehicle rolling away, they advise that if you are leaving an automatic ATV parked on an incline for any length of time, you should engage the parking position and consider chocking the wheels.
Anyone concerned that their Kymco ATV’s might be affected should contact Masco Ltd on 01743 761107.
Please note – All Kymco Road-Legal ATV’s manufactured after November 2007 have a mechanical parking brake fitted as standard.
